Greetings film aficionados, we received requests for another IN PERSON film conversation and so arranged to meet again at El Portal (95 Portal Ln just steps from Los Abrigados/Tlaquepaque)to talk about The Apprentice on Tuesday, March 25 at 5:00pm.
The Apprentice is what The New York Times calls an origin story for Donald J. Trump. Beginning in New York in 1973, the film traces Trump’s relationship with lawyer Roy Cohen, the chief counsel for Joseph McCarthy during the 1950s red scare. To quote The New York Times Manohla Dargis, “Roy has Donald at hello, the lawyer’s dead eyes locking on their target, and a transactional, mutually advantageous relationship soon develops.” Both Sebastian Stan, who played Donald Trump, and Jeremy Strong, the film’s Roy Cohen, were nominated for Oscars this year, As a “mesmerizing duet… one of the attractions of biopics is watching how they repackage reality into a fictional entertainment, one that sometimes, as in this movie, has the eerie sting of life..
Watch the film and join us to for an all too timely conversation on the current administration, power, and transactional politics. Wine and beer can be purchased at El Portal. You are also welcome to bring a bottle of wine (and/or snack) to share. Please park in the lower parking lots.
DORR’s political film club is hosted by DORR member Mik Jordahl (Attorney) and Board member Frankie Riemer (Professor).
