DORR Film Club – Reds

January 29 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Reds

Greetings film fans, how about a conversation about Reds (1981) available to rent on Amazon and on Apple TV.

on Thursday Jan 29, 2026, at 5:00 in person at The New Room of the Sedona United Methodist Church, 110 Indian Cliffs Rd, just off 179 and Back O’Beyond roundabout (Chapel Area).

Greetings film aficionados, we’ve been talking about films and political history, and in January, we continue with a conversation about “Reds,” Warren Beatty’s film about John Reed, the American journalist and author of Ten Days That Shook the World.  Described by Vincent Canby in The New York Times as “an extraordinary film, a big romantic adventure movie, “Reds” tells the story of Reed’s left-wing politics in the 1920s, his chronicling of the Russian Revolution, and his romance with writer Louise Bryant, played with “splendor” by the iconic Diane Keaton, who died in 2025.

We’re excited that Sue Gould has agreed to join us to share stories of life with her father, Louis Weinstock.  Sue writes, “My dad’s political activity in the ’30’s and ’40’s got him arrested, indicted, tried, found guilty, sentenced to 3 years in federal prison in the early ’50’s under the now defunct Smith Act, which made it illegal to teach and advocate the violent overthrow of the U.S government.  He never did anything of the sort but served his sentence anyway.  As both a Communist and painters’ union leader, he led hunger marches to Washington, fought for the creation of Unemployment Insurance and Social Security (which union leadership fought against!), appeared before Congress to make his case, and never gave up his beliefs or his activism.  It will be my pleasure to discuss his life and this particular era of America’s working class struggles.  “Reds” isn’t about that period, and preceded my father’s role in these struggles, but the Russian Revolution was an inspiration that drove him all his life.”

Watch the film (on your own) and join us to for a timely conversation on Thursday, January 29 at 5:00 in the New Room of the Sedona United Methodist Church 110 Indian Cliffs Rd. in the Chapel area, just off the St. Route 179 and Back O Beyond roundabout.  Feel free to bring finger foods and non-alcoholic beverages.

DORR’s political film club is hosted by DORR members Mik Jordahl (Attorney) and Frankie Riemer (Professor).
